Website Maintenance -
One of the most common things I hear from a client after the completion of their website is, "Now that my website is done, how can I manage it?"
It's always a tricky question. Factors to take into consideration are: the type of code used in the site; security measures that need to be considered; how large the site is, and how motivated the individual is to learn how to use an application program like Dreamweaver, or learn how to use another open source (Wordpress) or other secure interface that will transfer content and images.
My standard maintenance rate is $40.00 an hour. I can provide corporate clients with a daily log of work done on the site, which is available at any time for viewing. I bill out on the 1st of each month, for the work done during the month prior. That bill is then due on the 1st of the next month, so payment is due 60 days from the date the work is started. I can provide references if you need them, and samples of work I've already done.
If you are interested in learning how to do the maintenance on your own site, here are a few options:
- Set up a blog (see packages and rates) and pay for minimal instruction, or ask about working this into your package price. When you use a blog, you can add content from any computer you want, as long as you can access the internet. There are also a vast number of free tutorials online, and support forums available through the Wordpress Community section. (5 hrs. of instruction is usually more than sufficient)
- Take one of my classes offered through Lane Community College. Click on the classes tab at the top of the page. Keep in mind that I took 3 years of website development and management courses to learn what I use now, don't expect to be able to execute complicated changes on your site with the basic knowledge provided in just one class. You may still need to sign up for the advanced class & get some private instruction, depending on your unique situation.
- Individual instruction - I can offer you guidance at my basic rate of $40.00 per hour. When you are considering private instruction, keep in mind that the $40.00 an hour is also my standard maintenance rate... and after many years of experience, I can typically work at 3x the rate you will be able to, for awhile. I'm trying to discourage you from doing your own maintenance, I think it's great that you want to learn! However if you are working with a strict budget, it might be best to do a consulation first to come up with the best plan for you.
